College Essay # 2 - Swarthmore

2. Imagine that you have the opportunity to travel back through time. At what point in history would you like to stop and why? (Swarthmore)

Our English class recently read One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, a story of a group of men in an asylum and their journey to overcome the idea of confinement. Though the book was amazing in itself, the time period, which it was set in, was somewhat more intriguing to me than the story line itself. The book was set in 1950’s United States. This was when society had told everyone to become one … become “equal.” Thousands of houses were built in the same design in the suburbs, men would do similar jobs, men would wear similar attires to work, women were meant to be the house maker, and children were not exactly the “rebels” you see out here today. I don’t know about you, but I can see many things wrong with the list above.

If I were to travel back time, I would definitely visit 1950’s United States. The idea of looking down at a row of identical houses, the idea of watching men in black suits with brief cases walking to work like ants, the idea of seeing advertisements in which women were constantly reminded that they were “made” to take care of the men and children is all very fascinating to me. Being a woman myself, I would want to experience, just for a short while, how it feels like to be somewhat “oppressed” in a place where everything was already decided for you. Living in the modern world, we seldom value the idea of discipline and rules, and I think that it would be a good idea to go and experience conformity first hand. Although we are conformed at school to a certain extent, there is no reason why you can’t experience everything in a mass scale. Watching everyone living and being “exactly” the same may allow us all to value the rights to individuality that we all have access to.

On another note, it would be fun to wear those lavish dresses and have all your hair piled on top of your head for no reason. :D
